having taken the red pill…

…I became aware of forces around me, subtly telling me what to wear. I no longer obey, because I have a different perspective on life and I want to let others know, immediately upon seeing me.

One’s choices about clothing and accessories are the most versatile form of self-expression – it is faster to change a shirt or earrings than to adjust a face of makeup or hairstyle. Clothing is big. It covers us. It is visually arresting at a distance. Clothing is a highly accurate form of communication about what one is doing and can bring about an immediate change in how one is treated by others. Clothing communicates what social group we belong to and by extension what values we hold. Clothing offers clues to our position in our societies and thus, clues to how we will respond to various turnings of the wheel.  It expresses our mood, offers insight into our competence in various circumstances, and comforts those close to us with its familiarity.

We do not have to wear what is acceptable, consistent or safe. We do not have to look good. We do not have to dress according to the expectations of others, although at times, specific strategic reasons to do so may prompt any degree of conformity.

What we must do is bathe and cover our nakedness.

With those two rules as the foundation, our freedom is limited only by creativity and sewing skill. Coco Chanel said…

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”

As it is often wise to say little, why not let my clothes do the talking?
